Family of Jackson^7 Van Vickle

Jackson^7 Van Vickle (Evert^6 Van Vickle, Evert^5 Van Wicklen, Frederick^4, Evert^3, Gerrit^2, Jentie^1 Jeppes), b. 1823, Iowa (I have Jackson married first to Elizabeth and second to Louise. It is still possible that these are two different Jacksons. All the data currently available does not support this being one "Jackson" married to both of these women in succession.)

Married:

(first to): Elizabeth McMahan (b. abt 1824, OH), 25 July 1843, Davies County, MO

(second to): Louisa _______ (b. abt 1833, IL) before 1858

Children:
(by marriage to Elizabeth):
1. Harriett^8 Van Vickle, b. abt 1844, MO
(by marriage to Louisa. Cathy in 10 Nov 05 email claims that Jackson m. Louisa in Feb 1870 so these are not likely to be Louisa's children unless they are hers by a prior marriage. They may also not be Elizabeth's in the there is quite a gap between the birth of Harriett and the remaining children. Perhaps there was a wife between Elizabeth and Louisa? ):

2. Winfield^8 Scott Van Vickle, b. abt 1853, Iowa (or MO?)

3. Eliza^8 Van Vickle, b. abt 1859, Nebraska

4. John^8 Van Vickle, b. abt 1863, TX

5. Benjamin^8 Van Vickle, b. abt 1865, MO

(As Cathy points out in 10 Nov 05 email, there are numerous discrepancies in ages of children and states where born in the various years of the census pages in the source section below.)

Parents:
Jackson's parents are Evert and Sarah (White) Van Vickle
Elizabeth's parents are Mr. and Mrs. McMahan

Louisa's parents are: ________________

1850 Census Year in Holt, Missouri...a listing of Everett Van Vickle, 60, M, farmer, b. VA; Sarah Van Vickle, 59, F, b. MD; John VanVickle, 15, M, farmer, b. IL; next door is Jackson Van Vickle, 27, M, Farmer, b. IA; Eliza Van Vickle, 24, F, b. OH; and Harriett Van Vickle, 6, F, b. MO. These ages would give birth years of Evert (abt. 1790), Sarah (abt. 1789), Jackson (abt. 1823), John (abt 1835), Eliza (abt. 1826), and Hariet (abt. 1844).

1855 Nebraska Census for Pawnee County lists Jackson Van Vickle, Sen., b. in Ind., farmer, 2 males 21 and up; 1 male under 16, 1 female under 16; also, Jackson Van Vickle, Jr., b. in IL, farmer, 1 male 21 and up. (Information from Cathy via 11Nov05 email. She claims that the 1855 census lists Jackson in Richardson County, Salem Twp., NE. Also, the census of 1855 did not include the Half Breed Tract which was mostly in Richardson County. The work seems to have been done rather carelessly. Some residents of Richardson County are listed in Pawnee County, and the Christian names and initials are often incorrect. The enumeration was signed under oath, October 10, 1855 by James D. White.

1856 census, Richardson County, NE John Vanvickle, b. IL, farmer, 1 m 21 up; 1 m under 16, 1 female 16 up; Jackson Vanvickle, head, b. IN, farmer, 1 male, 21 up; 2 males under 16, 1 female 16 up. (from Cathy, in 11Nov05 email... It almost appears that the Jackson Jr. in the 1855 census was the John in the 1856 census. Both b. in IL. From the one census to the other, he had married and had a child? It may not be the same person, but if not, who is John Vanvickle? He is young. One could almost say, son of Jackson, Sr.. Both Jackson Sr. in the 1855 census and the Jackson in the 1856 census were b. IN.

From Early Ohio Settlers: Purchasers of Land in Southwestern Ohio, 1800-1840. Van Vickel, Robert (A)* August 17, 1812, residence Butler range 01, township 03, section 10. Alexander Grant was R1, T3, section 4, 1813. These sections touch corners, they were neighbors. Grant is my (Naomi Emmich) ancestor, his youngest aunt married Robert VanVickle. The land patent for Grant is in his name alone, dated 1813, yet in February 1819, he and Evert (Robert's brother) Van Vickle sell the land to Jonathan Winn. The only reason to present this is that it shows Evert Van Vickle and wife Sarah (White) Van Vickle were physically present before the justices of Butler Co, Ohio in February 1819 to sign this deed. Mel's synopsis and biography of Enoch Van Vickle would indicate they had already removed to Jennings Co, IN. I would suggest they may have moved around often, more than one direct move. If these folks could get to Iowa to have William there in 1816, they may have had cousins just across the river in what became Missouri. The army needed a ferry among other things. --from Naomi Emmich in Brian Christensen's Van Vickle Research, 1982-2001

Many Van Vickles buried in Johnson Cemetery, Blount Twp, Vermillion Co, IL incl Evert, Andrew, Robert, William, etc (only saw an index)

Ohio Records and Pioneer Families, Vol. 1-25 (Vol II, page 141) Everett Vansickle of PA married Sarah White of PA and settled in Butler County, Ohio; later in 1828 to Illinois. They had a son Enoch b. 1814 in Butler County, Ohio who married first Nancy White and had nine children. He married 2nd Mrs. Cynthia Souder Cline who was born 1823 in Pike Co., Ohio, the widow of Nathaniel Cline. They live in Illinois. --from Brian Christensen's Van Vickle Research, 1982-2000.
